MUSC Health East Mount Pleasant, SC
IIDA Award Winner for excellence in Interior Design
Collaboration with Stubbs Muldrow Herin Architects and Trident Construction
This 75,000 square foot new construction medical office building brings together a variety of different outpatient services, including urgent care, women’s imaging and infusion cancer treatment, previously scattered across Mount Pleasant. The design is geared entirely toward enhancing the patient experience while also creating a functional and inviting space for doctors, nurses, medical technicians and staff. The client asked the design team to create a “wow” experience for the patient. Visitors enter through a two-story atrium space with a folding ceiling plane, suspended 70 foot long art mobile, long expanses of wood, elegant punches of glass tile and fabric wrapped wall panels, and a grand stair floating adjacent to a floor-to-ceiling wall of flowing water, all working to create a warm, welcoming and healing environment.
This client recognized the therapeutic nature of art and asked us to make art an integral part of the design. The design includes batik, sculpture and other art by renowned Lowcountry artists. Running through the facility is an art-based narrative of life-giving rivers, flowing into botanical paper sculptures, woven into functional sweet grass baskets, all celebrating and telling a story of our local landscape and heritage and offering the patience an escape from their ailments.
